Do you have any idea how old the wiring in your home is? For some older homes, it might be ancient, even using some methods of wiring that are very outdated, and because of that, unsafe. For example, if you have aluminum wiring in your home, there is an added risk of fire, and the risk is greater the older the wiring is. Many times you can identify aluminum wiring by a stamp on it that says CA/ALR or something similar. If you have knob and tubing wiring, you might be hard pressed to find an electrician that knows how to properly retrofit it. Improper wiring could easily become a deathtrap. While these and other older technologies aren’t in use anymore, there are still many homes that are fairly new but have code violations that could turn dangerous.

Electricity is not something to experiment with, so unless you have the training and experience needed, you should leave any modifications to professionals.
