Most homes today have double-pane windows. These make a huge difference in insulation, affecting your heating, cooling, and sound insulation, but some homeowners might notice that they are not as efficient as they used to be. Often this is accompanied by a mist or film in between the panes of your window. This is an indicator that the seal that keeps outside air from entering the window has failed.
A double-pane window works so well because of the gas that is in between the panes which impedes the transfer of heat or sound. This gas needs to be sealed in, but what happens over time, especially to windows that are exposed to the sun, is that the gas expands and contracts, causing the seal to wear out.
Is there anything that you can do? Well, unfortunately, your options are limited. While repairs are possible, they are pricey and won’t bring your windows back to its original condition. While paying for new windows is going to cost you even more, it is usually the better alternative.
